Yes.. Isnt it about acceptance of both the aspects..?? In the south American traditions there is also the story of the two brothers... One appears to be the 'light' one - quetzecoatl .. and then there is Tezcatlipoca, the dark brother.., Tezcatlipoca can tempt humans into self-destruction, but he can also cleanse them of contamination, release them from guilt and other self sabotaging ways: I reckon that happens when we accept him, We surely need both brothers to be in balance within ourselves... If we only accept one we are in danger of projecting the other outwards...they are great mirror images... And Tezcatlipoca is also called 'smoking mirror'...

Hi Val – lovely to hear from you.
I would say Australian pagans are largely leaning towards listening to the earth, relating to the earth wherever we find ourselves. Not appropriating, but learning to listen. I actually SAW the rainbow serpent – lying in the mists in the valley below my house (an actual rainbow in serpantine form, twisted through the valley) – what am I supposed to do with that? There are also very clear boundaries we don’t approach – land that is considered sacred to Aboriginal ceremony we don’t go near, we respect if they ask us not to climb certain mountains, or that some areas of land are women’s or men’s only… We don’t actually work directly with Aboriginal myths, in the way that we might work with a Celtic or Egyptian myth… but the land and trees and animals here have their own stories, and when we listen, we begin to create relationship with them.
Some Australian Pagans (but I think less and less) still seem to be stuck in the idea that Fire is in the South, for instance (though it’s the equivelent to your North, the sector of the sky which the sun never touches)… I did write an article about this once, http://esoteric.2hav.net/printart.php?artid=1922 is the link.
Aboriginal elders I have heard speak basically say, you need to create your own relationship with this land. Which is surely the case anywhere and everywhere… this is what Paganism is about, and it’s what our cultures have forgotten. It is sensitive, and sometimes political, and also unfolding.
I hope that gives you a bit more to go on! And I hope to see you again – maybe in snowy Yorkshire – sounds beautiful.
Regards, JANE MEREDITH

Hi Jane - attended your meeting at AIry Fairy in Sheffield last year - keep reading your e-zine, am on your mailing list - I am interested in the way you are developing your work with Australia - as in the land/energies and so forth, including first people mythology with the rainbow serpent. I have talked to a couple of Australian pagans down the years who were completely disengaged in this regard and seemed unable to deal with this, feeling that they would be treading on some sensitive toes, I think - one said that these myths were a no-go area for anyone white and European in origin - and I could not quite work out how they managed to work in any way with purely European symbolism and myth, the Celtic wheel/wolves/native British trees etc, without any reference to the land they were actually in - I could not see how there could be any connection with their surroundings in the immediate way that, I would have thought, was necessary, or at least desirable, in order to be a pagan. I am glad that you are doing this, it just seems to make more sense, and wonder if your way is more or less prevalent? - did I just meet an unrepresentative couple of people before? - are you at the cutting edge here? I am genuinely interested/curious to talk to you about this and hope you will be able to mail me at some point. Anyway, all the best from snowy Yorkshire, best regards, Val Copley

For the Summer Solstice, my son obtained - and gave me - an Ogre Resister. That was after hours of work fixing my blog and website... So I have the card up above my desk, and my own Ogre Resister (bred and raised by me) to prevent any further attacks. Very nice ending.
